The square fields of these olive & almond groves, remind us of the square fields of the Roman centuriation, the way the Romans divided the land.

Faro of St Eufemia Vieste
This tiny island stands on the north-eastern tip of the Gargano peninsula, opposite the ancient town of Vieste. It is believed to be one of the oldest settlements in the Daunia region of Puglia. Finds from Neolithic to Medieval times have been uncovered throughout the ages. Recently a discovery of inscriptions in a cave tell us that the grotto was dedicated to Venus Sosandra.

Basilica of St Leucio at Canosa di Puglia near Bari
Amongst olive groves are the foundation and remains of an early Christian Basilica dedicated to San Leucio. It probably was a pagan temple of Hellenistic influence which the Romans adapted and dedicated to Minerva and in the IV-V century AD, was transformed into a Christian Basilica by the Byzantines.

Monte San Vincenzo Cropmarks of a Neolithic settlement
Crop marks of one of the many Neolithic settlements dotted around the Tavoliere. A number of them were discovered by John Bradford during WW2 while he was stationed in Puglia. As an Intelligence Officer, examining RAF aerial photographs for military purposes, he was struck by the richness of the remains buried under this amazing landscape.

Landscape of olives and almond groves in Puglia
Wedge-like fields of olive and almond groves in the centre of the photos make a pleasing pattern. This landscape is a palimpsest : settlements of all ages and geology overlay each other and can be traced and disentangled by the examination and study of cropmarks in the growing vegetation.
